git - the simple guide →
Even though I’ve been using git for a few years already, there are still many unexplored corners of my favorite source-control system. Roger did a fantastically creative effort to try to simplify and clarify some core git concepts. As he puts it “no deep shit”. For slightly more advanced git candy this is a good start.

[Review] Pro Objective-C Design Patterns for iOS
It’s a long time since I posted something serious here. Shame on me! Cheap excuse: I have been busy. Busy with work and busy enjoying the German air of my new home.
Another thing that kept me busy was this neat book published by Apress: “Pro Obj-C Design Patterns for iOS”, by Carlo Chung. True to the short paragraph on the cover “Use Objective-C design patterns to bring your iOS skill to the...

[Tutorial] Git server on Mac OS X
Setting up a public git repository on Mac OS has a few tricks and here’s a step-by-step tutorial to the rescue. I needed to set this up for my own projects and most of the information was scattered across the web.
Let’s roll! On the server 1. Install git. I’ve used both http://code.google.com/p/git-osx-installer/ and the one from Mac Ports. Both work fine. 2. What’s your...

Lua vs. Obj-C
Lua
For some time now I’ve been digging into Lua. Coming from Python, the power of a clean syntax and good documentation is impossible to ignore.
Lua is a powerful, fast, lightweight, embeddable scripting language.
Lua combines simple procedural syntax with powerful data description constructs based on associative arrays and extensible semantics. Lua is dynamically typed, runs by interpreting...

[Review] The Bootstrapper’s Bible by Seth Godin
The Bootstrapper’s Bible: Volume 1
“There’s never been a better time to start a business with no money. And this manifesto […] will show you how” Seth Godin
Written in typical Seth Godin style, with clear examples and with easy to follow explanations, this book feels empowering, with advices and examples from small and big companies.
You might say “Meh, I’m bootstrapping everyday”. You...

[Review] iPhone User Interface Design Projects
iPhone User Interface Design Projects published at Apress is a great book for reading about the experience of other iPhone developers that published their applications in the AppStore and were successful. Mostly focusing on the user interface and user experience aspect, the book also covers product management, marketing, testing, tools and team dynamics.
The path of perfecting my mobile...

Back to Europe
7 months of Singapore have past and my journey close the Equator has ended. I want to thank Calvin, Jean and their wonderful daughter, Kate, for hosting me over there, even if I don’t look very friendly with my developer-mode beard on. They are great people and more lucky than they think.
The people I have met in Singapore have all told a story, one way or another, dos, dont’s and...

A Day Without Colors
This is the result of a 24h experiment I tried, to see the web in a different perspective. In an environment prone to distractions, finding applications that allow me to focus are a breath of fresh air.
So I’ve set my Mac OS to render everything in grayscale and continued my daily tasks as normal. Most of the apps I use daily are fairly simple, w/o many flashy buttons and call to actions. Mainly...

I have just finished my weekly cleaning, something which I often forget how good it feels. I admit that none of the work desks that I had trough the years were never as clean and perfectly arranged as the ones you see in minimalist offices showcases. The is always a book waiting to be read, a key wanting to me to remember it or a piece of paper with a doodle. There’s always a reason behind...

Balance
Recently this concept obsesses me: balance. How to reach the ideal balance state given a ton of factors? The only solution I’ve found is to split the big picture in smaller contexts and try to balance them individually.
Balanced human relations: meeting new people vs keeping up with old friends.
Balanced product development: coding vs customer relations.
Balanced product design: looks good vs...

Innovation is almost insane by definition: most people view any truly innovative idea as stupid, because if it was a good idea, somebody would have already done it. So, the innovator is guaranteed to have more natural initial detractors than followers.
